The Black Donnellys est une série "drama" de 13 épisodes.
Il s'agissait d'une série de "mid-season", c'est à dire une série qui débute six mois après les autres et qui a donc deux fois moins d'épisodes. (c'est comme ça qu'a débuté Grey's Anatomy, qui forte de son succès a pu rempiler à la rentrée suivante)

Cette série dramatique suit les exploits de quatres jeunes frères irlandais (Jimmy, Tommy, Kevin et Sean) issus de la classe ouvrière. Leur implication dans une organisation du crime de New York mettra leur vie en danger et ils devront tout faire pour se protéger de l'hostilité des autres familles de la Big Apple qui veulent posséder leur territoire. Ils sont prêts à tout pour se protéger les uns les autres, même à mentir, tricher, voler et, parfois, faire appel aux flics.
L'aspirant gangster Joey "Ice Cream" nous raconte l'histoire de cette fratrie au moment même où les Donnelly s'apprêtent à faire leurs premiers pas dans le crime organisé. Ce passage à l'âge adulte va affecter leurs vies à tout jamais et celles de leur famille et amis.

Cette série est le produit de Paul Haggis et Bobby Moresco, qui ont remporté tous deux un oscar en 2006 pour le film Collision.
Haggis était également le scénariste de "Million Dollar Baby"

Selon NBC, la série a été un flop, car le series premiere n'a attiré que 8 millions d'américains, et l'audience n'a cessé de chuter pour atteindre 5.10 millions de téléspectateurs. C'est pourquoi la série n'a pas été reconduite.

MediaBlvd Magazine> What was your reaction when you first read the script for The Black Donnellys?

Olivia Wilde> When I first read the script for The Black Donnellys, I was completely shocked that it was a television show, and not a film. It read like a film. It was actually better than 90% of the film scripts that I read the previous year. I had not wanted to go back into the television, but the second I read it, I knew I had to try to get this role, but I didn�t think that I was going to be able to get it.

Jonathan Tucker> I had somewhat the same reaction. We read scripts all the time, and it�s unfortunate that you see all these movies that get made that just aren�t that interesting. Now, more and more, actors are reading scripts just for the script and the story, and this came across as spectacular. It was a hard decision, though. I didn�t really want to play the same character for five years.


MediaBlvd> As you step into these characters, what do you do to get into their mind set, since they are so different from you, personally?

Olivia> I met with Barbara Moresco, who is Bobby Moresco�s wife, before we shot the pilot, and discussed what it was like to grow up as a young woman in this type of neighborhood. I still use my notes form that interview as we shoot the show. It is invaluable information for me because I did grow up in a very different type of environment. Also, shooting the show in New York City really helps get into the role. Our crew is mostly from neighborhoods like the one we are creating. And, having Bobby Moresco around to keep us in the moment and keep us close to where he comes from, and reminding us how people think and react and speak, really helped.

Jonathan> More than anything else, this show is about truth. That�s really what we�re hoping separates us from a lot of the other shows that are on network television. It is more cinematic, like the shows you�ll see on HBO or Showtime. It�s more like going to sit in a movie theater. I was able to find the truth, in regards to that working class, Irish American experience, because it was very close to home. I grew up in Charlestown, in the city of Boston, and I was blessed to be raised right there, on Monument Square. Every morning, I'd hop on the bus to go 45 minutes, out into the suburbs in Brooklyn, where I went to school, so I got to be in both worlds.


MediaBlvd> How do you get into character before a scene?

Jonathan> I've always used music for my acting and I have a very personal play list that I created for the character. iTunes has been a real blessing for that because it allows me to personalize the moment and the whole general overview for the show.


MediaBlvd> Did you have brothers growing up?

Jonathan> I have a younger sister and I love her very much. As much as this is a show that is specifically about New York City, and about the Irish and the Black Irish, and a working class group of brothers, it is a universal story, in regard to what you would do for family. I don�t have any brothers, but I can fundamentally understand being put into a position where I have to make the extraordinary choice to take arms to protect the people I love


MediaBlvd> Did the fact that your father is a great art professor help you prepare for the art student side of your character?

Jonathan> My father teaches at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. It is one of the only public institutions in the entire city which hosts almost 60 colleges and universities. The average age in his class is 27. A lot of people have kids, a lot of them have very real concerns and they're coming in for almost an hour, on public transportation, once or twice a week, to learn about French impressionism and modern sculpture. That is a beautiful thing to see. And, that experience has been a part of my life, so I can understand the duality with Tommy because it is very much the duality that you have in a lot of the students that are coming from tough neighborhoods to go to UMass.


MediaBlvd> Olivia, how do you deal with the moral ambiguity of what your character is struggling with?

Olivia> She struggles with that for the whole season, and she decides that she has to protect them because they are her family, but she needs to remove herself a little bit from them so that she can protect herself. I think that�s why she distanced herself from Tommy against every instinct that she has of loving him. She�ll clean up the blood, but she won't knowingly condone the violence. At least, not yet.


MediaBlvd> Do you ever envy the guys getting to do run around with guns and stuff?

Olivia> You just wait. Jenny gets tougher and tougher. I love her strength. There�s a few times when you think, �If I were Jenny, I would break down or kill somebody myself.� But, she has learned to practice extreme restraint and self-control. But, she does get tougher and tougher. The only reason she doesn�t fight as much as they do is because she knows it is usually not a good idea, but she eventually loses a little more control.


MediaBlvd> Since it is a very testosterone-filled set, have you played any pranks on the guys to show then that you can hold your own?

Olivia> They play pranks on each other, so there�s no room for my pranks. But, they are just a pleasure to work with, each and every one of them, and I never really feel outnumbered. I guess I feel like one of the guys, or they feel like one of the girls. It�s all good.


MediaBlvd> Is it true that you�re actually a princess?

Olivia> My husband�s father was a prince. Unfortunately, he passed away a couple of years ago, but he was a prince in Rome and, by law, so it�s my husband, which technically makes me a princess. It�s a very archaic, aristocratic title that the Pope gave out to a few families in Rome in the 15th century. It�s funny because, in writing, occasionally I�ll get a piece of mail that says Princess Olivia on it, and I�ll get really excited and keep it for a year. But, I'm not a princess on set.


MediaBlvd> Do you bring that experience into your character, about how you got married, along with your rebellious side?

Olivia > When I read the pilot script, I thought, �Wow, I've never known anyone else who got married when they were 18, except for my grandmother,� but I didn�t know about that until after I got married. I do take into account the fact that, to really go against the norm and do something that other 18-year-old girls are certainly not doing, you have to be a little bit different and a little bit of an oddball. I recognize that in Jenny, and in myself, and it definitely helped me understand her in a way that I think other girls wouldn�t really be able to understand her.


MediaBlvd> Have you known any families like the Donnellys, not necessarily from the organized crime element, but in terms of family values and loyalty?

Olivia> My father is from County Waterford in the Southeast of Ireland and I went to acting school in Dublin, but when I was in Ireland as a young person, I was always in the south in a very small fishing village that a few thousand people, at most, most lived in. The kids there became each other�s families. Some people didn�t have mothers or fathers, and everyone became a huge family. The tight knit group that formed really informs my acting on the show. It is very Irish to take care of each other and to struggle through very profound, difficult times with humor. I didn�t know any families like the Donnellys, although there was this family in our town that I wanted to be a part of, so I understand this feeling of being friends with the family and always feeling like wished you were one of them, just because they were such a tight knit group and they took care of each other.


MediaBlvd> Were you a tomboy as a kid?

Olivia> Yeah, I was a tomboy. I didn�t have a bunch of brothers, but I always wanted them, so I sort of adopted a few of my great friends to be my brothers, very much like my character. My mother was a very strong woman and a very important part of my life, so as I got older, I became more of a girl. Now, I have 10 wonderful girlfriends in my life, and yet, I still feel like a tomboy all the time. I think I bring that into Jenny. I always imagine that, if we have another season, one day we�ll meet one of Jenny�s friends, who is a girl. I'd love to see Jenny trying to get dressed up for a night out, or something. She is so not girly that it would be great to see her try.


MediaBlvd> How difficult is it, as actors, to wait months and months, after getting picked up, for your show to finally air?

Jonathan> Emotionally, all of us were cutting ourselves, so to speak. It stands on its own. It was such an incredible place for all of us to be in, and we�re so changed as actors and human beings because of it.

Olivia> Also, I think we were very blessed to have the opportunity to shoot 13 episodes without premiering so we can concentrate fully on the work without really worrying about doing press while we�re on set working because that really does distracts you. It was a wonderful thing that we got to just really concentrate and be in the moment.


MediaBlvd> Olivia, can you talk about how your role on The O.C. heightened your profile?

Olivia> That role was amazing for me because I had no idea how many people it would reach and how many lives it would touch. I still get letters from young women around the world saying that I helped them accept themselves and how they're different from their peers, whether it was their sexuality or just because they feel like an outsider, much like my character was. That�s what�s really important to me about having done that role. I feel like it made a difference in a few people�s lives. I really enjoy playing an outsider.


MediaBlvd> Did you guys always want to be actors while you were growing up, or did you have other professions in mind?

Olivia> There was no other profession for me. I was either going into an insane asylum, or I was going to be an actor. If I didn�t have this profession, I don�t know what I�d do. I'm so grateful that this tendency to switch to different characters and talk to myself can be legitimized and I can get paid for it. I always wanted to do it.

Jonathan> As actors, the older we get, the more and more we�re trying to go back to that place when we were children. No matter what anyone tells you or doesn�t tell you, you are going to want to play like that for hours.


MediaBlvd> What did it feel like for you the first time you stepped in front the camera for your first professional acting role?

Jonathan> I was 11, and I remember looking around and saying, �Gosh, this is it. This is fun. This is everything I want to do.�

Olivia> It�s exhilarating to know, �Oh, there�s nothing else for me now, now that I�ve tasted it. This is it. And, I�ll sacrifice everything to be able to do it.�


MediaBlvd> What was it like to work with someone the caliber of Paul Haggis?

Jonathan> This is Paul and Bobby�s show and they were there with us, every day. It was a very intimate relationship that was created between all of us. It was interesting to go to Morocco to shoot In the Valley of Elah with Paul, and to see him working on a huge movie with Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon and other wonderful actors. Paul is a beautifully complex person with an incredible sense of empathy. When you're working with him, he�s both behind the camera and right there next to you. You feel like he�s a huge part of the performance, and he is just tremendous. He is such an amazing person in my life.

Olivia> He became my mentor when we shot the pilot. A lot of people assumed he would not really be around, and that he would just slap his name on it for fun, and that�s not the case. He not only directed two episodes, but also supervised the editing of all of them and was always available to us. He was open to my very early morning calls. He is a very hands-on, wonderful person.
