| ‘Moonlight,’ ‘Gossip Girl,’ ‘Big Bang Theory’ Show MomentumNovember 29, 2007.By Brian Stelter Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) and his wife Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon) star in the CBS drama “Moonlight,” one of the few new shows to gain audience from September-October to November. In a press release from CBS projecting that it would finish in first place among total viewers for the November ratings “sweeps” period, this sentence stands out: “Of the 26 new series that premiered in September, only three are up in A18-49 this November vs. September-October.” In November, the three programs to raise ratings among 18- to 49-year-olds were the CBS vampire drama “Moonlight” (up 9 percent), the CW’s New York fantasy “Gossip Girl” (up 8 percent) and the CBS comedy “The Big Bang Theory” (up 6 percent). Networks routinely see significant viewership declines as the season progresses, as viewers stop sampling new shows. New programming has largely been met with a yawn from viewers this fall, so programs that manage to show ratings growth are highly valued by their broadcasters. Every other new show lost viewers aged 18 to 49 between September-October and November, according to CBS. NBC’s highly-touted “Bionic Woman” showed especially significant declines, down 37 percent this month. The November sweeps period, which ended Wednesday night, is used to set advertising rates for broadcast networks. While final program data won’t be available for weeks, CBS said it was on target to win the month among total viewers and viewers ages 25 to 54. ABC was projected to be No. 1 among 18- to 49-year-olds. Source | |
